Zurich, Switzerland is a melting pot of upscale stores and boutiques, and compared to some other European Capitals, Zurich comes very highly regarded. Switzerland is usually stereotyped for their products such as watches and chocolates and a walk along Bahnhofstrasse which is long considered to be the primary shopping street in the world. But there is more to it than just that stereotype, Zurich is one of Europe’s finest when it comes to shopping. Taking a weekend break in Zurich, the Bahnhofstrasse is one of the suggested streets to explore specifically the department stores Globus and Jelmoli.
All of these are just very few reasons why holiday in Zurich is now synonym of “quality of life”. Swiss weather north of the St. Gotthard tunnel may not be the most pleasant, but this city has all the rest. Public transport, offices, services in general are timely and efficient. Streets and walls are clean. Everything’s so tidy and planned out that some may have now the impression of living in some kind of “Truman Show” setting.
Some people are natural party animals and for them the perfect function is to go clubbing in one of the many nightclubs and red-light district strip clubs that are scattered throughout the city. Others will prefer the more cultural activities such as opera performances at the Zurich Opera House. But for others the theatre is one of the primary reasons to get out beyond the Zurich hotels and into the city, and in that regards the city has some of the best theatres in Europe, with the Schauspielhaus regarded as one of the most important theatres in the German-speaking section of Europe.
Go window shopping: on the Bahnhof Strasse. This street is one of the most exclusive and expensive in Zürich, so perhaps use your imagination more than your wallet. Pretty architecture and sights such as the Rennweg and Paradeplatz along the way makes Bahnhof Strasse a great spot.
Get your feet wet: at the Barfussbar (barefoot bar!), Frauenbad. A perfect spot for summer evenings, order yourself a drink, kick off your shoes and enjoy the view over the river and city beyond while dipping your toes in the water. Heavenly!
