Today’s Adventure Could Be Just Around the Corner

With so many people staying put for the Summer, it’s a great time to take advantage of your local history and heritage and visit a museum in your hometown or surrounding area. A day-trip to a local museum or two is a great way to get to know your city or state a little better, take advantage of some summer savings and have a bit of an adventure while you enjoy your “stay-cation.”

I did a search for “museums nearby” on Google and came up with over fifty different museums and historical sites to visit within a 50 mile radius. Now I live in San Antonio, which to some probably seems like the big city, though you’ll never hear that from Houstonians or those in the DFW Metroplex. So results will vary, but I guarantee you’ll find somewhere to visit, learn and have some fun.

In my search, I discovered a transportation museum nearby that I didn’t even know existed. My 8-year-old boy will love the trains on exhibit. There are several pioneer museums close by and one in an old saloon with an exhibit on the Texas Rangers (the lawmen, not the baseball team). If you live by a military base, your likely to find some exhibits and a military history museum there.

I’m always amazed at how often we’re completely ignorant of our own local history. I fully admit to being guilty of this myself. On vacation, we march like ants with a purpose, consuming entertainment and culture with purposeful diligence. Get home, and the only time we seem to visit the sites and attractions our town has to offer is when we have family or friends visiting. That’s when we decide to show off our local culture.

So don’t let your stay-cation go to waste. Don’t wait for someone else to give you a reason to enjoy what your hometown has to offer. Find that hidden gem in town that no one else seems to know about and make it your next stop on your Summer itinerary. It’s your hometown. Why not enjoy it?
