Software Engineer salaries in 2018, tech levels, and lifestyle

Google tech lead Patrick Shyu explains how much a Software Engineer makes in Silicon Valley.

Hi all, salary is a delicate topic and a lot of people avoid discussing it. But I think there’s been a lot of misinformation about SW engineering salaries, either based on old data or figures that don’t include stock, bonus, and equity refresher amounts. The actual total compensation may be surprisingly higher than you think! As a result of this though, I suspect people are either not motivated to get into software engineering, settling for lesser amounts or being underpaid, or making career decisions & relocating based on inaccurate data. I hope this video can help inspire/motivate you, or to just add clarity.

My estimates could be off, and I’m basing them off of people I’ve talked to, as well as sites like Blind and Quora — these figures generally apply only for Silicon Valley top tech companies. Paysa and Glassdoor can be good resources too, but their numbers generally seem a bit off.

I also took this chance to explain about tech levels / career progression and my own lifestyle philosophy, which I think are really interesting to think about.

Let me know what you think in the comments below! Would love to see what your thoughts are, and whether I’m on point or off base here.
