New species found in Papua New Guinea
More than 200 species of animals and plants have recently been unveiled after two-month survey in Nakanai and Muller mountain ranges. The discoveries consist of 2 mammals, 24 species of frog, 9 plants, nearly 100 insects and about 100 spiders. It was reported that the project was implemented by Conservation International’s rapid assessment programme, Papua New Guinea’s Institute for Biological Research and A Rocha International Conservation Organization. Scientists explored different altitudes, cave systems and rivers throughout Muller and Nakanai ranges. They accessed remote areas by plane, helicopter and even on foot.
In south-east Asia, new species were also introduced for the first time in a WWF International report. It can be seen that the Greater Mekong is considered to have diverse habitats and species. The Greater Mekong region covers Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the southern Chinese province of Yunnan.
