Inspirational Thoughts For the Day – A Friend is a Present You Give Yourself
I met my best friend in the strangest way. I was 20 years old and had just finished studying and was all ready to tackle the world and its challenges but wasn’t too sure where I wanted to work. I was dispatched to a friend of my father’s niece, a top executive, for career advice and walked out of her office with a job. Little did I realize, that my first employer would be my best friend for years to come.
We’ve been through so much together over the years. I’ve seen her getting married twice and stood by her side when she went through the trauma of losing her husband to cancer. She was there to see me getting married too. We moved country, in fact, we moved to a new continent together with our spouses and started all over again. I’ve seen her fall and get up and go again so many times over the years and she’s always been there to advise, empathize and share a joke with me. We speak to each other practically every day and always have something to share. Of course we’ve had our squabbles over the years too but they’ve been few in comparison to the positive value our friendship has.
I have a few other friends too from school days. One of them started primary school with me and we were in the same class throughout our schooldays. We live in different countries now but still keep in touch and we always manage to pick up where we left off. Friends are so essential to one’s well being. I don’t have hundreds of friends but, what I do have, is a few that I’d lay my life on the line for and I’m sure they’d do the same for me. It’s so true that a friend is a present you give yourself!
