FIFA Golden Ball Winners Through Decade

It is only one month to go the date that FIFA will announce the winner of FIFA Golden Ball 2010. At present, there are four promising candidates for this title including Xavi Hernandez, Lionel Messi, Diego Forlan and David Villa. An official result will be informed on January 10, 2010 but let’s take a look at the winners last seasons.

 

In 2000, Luis Figo, who was named among FIFA 100, became European Footballer of the Year (or Golden Ball) while Zinedine Zidane, one of the best soccer players of all times, picked up FIFA World Player of the Year thanks to their constant successes in both club and national team level.

In 2001, Luis Figo continued to win FIFA World Player of the Year, whereas British soccer player Michale Owen was named European Footballer of the Year.

Ronaldo, the most talented goal-scorer in the World Cup’s history with fifteenth goals, won the two honorable prizes including European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year in 2002.

In 2003, Zinedine Zidane won FIFA World Player of the Year twice while Pavel Neved reached European Footballer of the Year.

In 2004, Shevchenko became European Footballer of the Year and Ronaldinho won FIFA World Player of the Year.

2005 marked the milestone in Ronaldinho’s career when he won the two prizes: European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year.

Ronaldinho is a free-kick specialist and has exceptional dribbling ability.

In 2006, Fabio Canavaro, an Italian center-back footballer, was the owner of both European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year.

In 2007, the handsome Brazilian soccer player Kaka owned two prizes: European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year.

In 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo wrote his name into the world football’s history with two titles: European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year

In 2009, Lionel Messi from Argentina won both European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year after he helped Barcelona reach three unprecedented victories namely Champions League, the Spanish title and the Copa del Rey
