Blogging Advice from Ohio State’s PRSSA Regional Conference

Blogging has become one of the most important ways for brands and companies to build trust with their current and future customers, improve their search engine ranking, and develop a reputation as the expert in their field. Individuals, too, can benefit from a personal blog as it can help them grow their influence, build their network, and lead to new opportunities.

But getting started with blogging can be tough for both companies and individuals. You may struggle with what to write about or whether anyone will be interested in what you have to say. These are common fears, but to succeed in blogging you must push doubt aside and tackle it with a learn-as-you-go mentality.

I recently had the opportunity to speak at Ohio State’s PRSSA Regional Conference as part of an entrepreneurship panel. During and after the panel I received an abundance of questions about blogging. Maybe you have also wondered about these same things when considering starting a blog:

1.) How often should I blog to keep people’s interest and build a following?
2.) How often should I update my blog to help with search engine ranking? (SEO)
3.) Will I lose credibility if I don’t blog often enough?

Just Do It

The best advice I can offer new bloggers? Just do it. Set a goal for yourself such as blogging once a week for a month, and then stick to it. Don’t over-plan or over-think it, or you may never get started. Dive in, put yourself out there, and then adjust and improve as you go. It can be challenging, but there are tremendous benefits for those who stick with it.
