Constipation is a very common disorder faced by a person at least once in his or her life. The problem of constipation is caused due to unhealthy eating habits. Person coping with constipation finds difficult to pass the stools as it becomes harder. The stools become harder as some important constituents like dietary fibre is inadequate or missing in the diet. Surya Namaskara- The Sun Salutation is a prayer in motion. Surya namaskar consists of a sequence of twelve postures performed continuously and combined with synchronized breathing. Each position counteracts the preceding one producing a balance between flexions and extensions. Surya Namaskar has several benefits. It activates almost all the glands of the endocrinal system. Because of this internal activation, the pancreas, adrenal, thyroid, pituitary and some other glands begin to secrete their respective hormones in normal way. Surya Namaskara corrects disorders of the pancreas, liver and cure constipation, wind troubles, indigestion, acidity, intestinal disorder.

Pavanamukta Asana- The Sanskrit word pavana means air or wind and mukta means freedom or release, therefore this is the “wind relieving posture” so named because it assists in releasing trapped digestive gas from the stomach and intestines. It is also improves other gastrointestinal problems like upset stomachs and constipation by stimulating the abdominal region.

Hala Asana- Halasana means a plough. Stretching our body in a way that resembles the plough is called as Halasana. This particular Asana helps us building our muscles, especially the back muscles, regulates the blood flow
in our body and would regulate constipation due to weak abdominal muscles. This Asana can be performed for duration of couple of minutes.

Tada Asana- The proper execution and continual practice of the tada-asana along with other postures helps to re-train the body to stand correctly and reverse the negative effects of poor posture. Many common ailments and discomforts can be traced to poor posture. If the spine is not properly aligned or if there is tightness or stiffness in the back, the result is often an imbalance in the body. When this imbalance becomes chronic many kinds of disorders arise in the organs, glands and nervous system.

The Bow Pose (Dhanurasana)- Stretching the legs on the ground like a stick and catching hold of the toes with the hands and curving the body like a bow is called Dhanurasana. Bow posture keeps the spine healthy and flexible, removes the nervous debility and helpful in relieving the pitta disorders and constipation, improves digestion and massage entire back.

The Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana)- The word Sarvangasana is formed from the Sanskrit words ‘sarva’ and ‘anga,’ where ‘sarva’ means all and ‘anga’ means body. In this Asana, all the body parts are involved harmoniously. It brings relief from pains in the back part of the neck. Sarvangasana is advised for persons suffering from constipation, indigestion, asthma and reduced virility. This asana is known as the “Mother” pose, the Queen of the asanas.

Irregular periods are simply those that are not regular. If you suffer from irregular periods, you simply will not know when your period is going to appear. Cycles can vary from 23 to 35 days, but they are classed as regular if your periods occur at roughly the same time each cycle. So, even if your periods are, say, 35 days apart instead of the usual 28, but they always appear at day 35, they would be classified as being ‘normal’. Irregular periods can be extremely difficult or even impossible to track.

Yoga Practice For Irregular Periods

There are certain general yoga Asanas, which are beneficial in addition to specific ones targeting the root cause. They are as follows:

1. Baddha Konasana (Cobbler pose, sitting)

2. Supta Baddhakonasana (Cobbler pose, lying down)

3. The Cow Pose (Gaumukhasan – extremely beneficial for irregular periods)

4. Janu Shirasana (Head to Knee Pose)

5. Virasana (The Hero Pose)

6. Supta Virasana (Hero Pose, lying down)

7. The Cobra Pose (Bhujang Asana)

8. The Half Wheel Pose (Ardhachakrasana)

9. The Lion Pose (For thyroid disorders)

These poses are aimed at increasing spinal flexibility, toning abdominal muscles, reducing stress levels, and regulating the endocrine system to restore hormonal balance. Some re-energize the energy centers of the body and help balance body functions. It is advised to do these poses for 3 to 5 times and hold your body in the stretched position for at least 30 seconds each time.

Along with these Asanas, breathing exercises (Pranayama) are very beneficial to regulating the menstrual cycle. Anulom Vilom (deep breathing through alternate nostril) is very beneficial to reducing stress levels and cooling your body and Kapalbhati (forceful breathing focusing on pressurizing the stomach) is helpful for regulating thyroid, obesity, and digestive disorders. All these factors can sometimes work together to cause irregular periods.

Home Remedies for Irregular Periods

Once your doctor has given a go ahead, you could use a lot of home remedies for irregular periods. Some of the home remedies for irregular periods include:

1. Asafetida is widely known for its beneficial effects in regularizing the problem of irregular periods.

2. Women who are anemic suffer a lot during menstruation. Sesame seeds offer relief from pain during menstruation. Add one tablespoon of sesame seeds in one glass of water and boil it.  Allow it to cool and strain the mixture. Drink this water twice a day during menstruation.

3. Avoid fried foods, caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, and colas and meat and alcohol during menstruation as it can disrupt the natural cycle of your body.

4. Drinking the juice of bitter gourd everyday can also help to regularize your periods.

5. Drinking fennel seeds mixed in a glass of water is also recommended for restoring regular periods.

6. Grind one teaspoon of radish seeds and mix with buttermilk. Drink this mixture every day.

7. Consuming grape juice daily is also recommended to restore regular periods.

8. Drink a glass of carrot juice everyday for three months. This herbal remedy helps in treating an irregular menstrual cycle
