Air Zimbabwe, “Zimbabwean hospitality in the skies”, is the national airline of Zimbabwe, headquartered at Harare International Airport in Harare. It operates services in southern Africa, Asia and to London Gatwick Airport. Its main base is Harare International Airport. The company is a member of the African Airlines Association. Air Zimbabwe is currently ranked as a two-star airline by Skytrax.

Air Zimbabwe can trace its history directly to the formation, on 1 June 1946, of Central African Airways which was a joint airline between Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. In 1967 the three countries agreed to ‘divorce’ which led to the formation of Air Rhodesia Corporation on 1 September 1967. The airline changed its name to Air Zimbabwe Corporation in February 1980 at Independence. The Airline became a wholly government-owned private company (registered as Air Zimbabwe Pvt Limited) on 20th November 1997, from being Air Zimbabwe Corporation.


Air Zimbabwe also runs Technical and Commercial Training schools at its headquarters which offer ticketing, cargo handling, and aircraft engineering and pilot technical courses.

Plane Craft and Flight Numbers:

The airline has a three digit Flight Number with Airline Code “UM”, the flight numbers are usually of 200, 300 and 700 series. Plane / Flight Number: Air Zimbabwe uses Boeing 737-200 air planes for domestic and short haul services (Total planes: 3 capacity 105), Boeing 767-200 is used in International Flights (total planes: 2 seating capacity 230) and Xian Ma60 for domestic flights (total 3: capacity 60).


The airline currently serves 9 destinations in Africa, Asia and Europe. Six of these destinations are international ones. Regional and domestic services were suspended for a short period in May 2011, following both the grounding of its Boeing 737-200 fleet by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe over maintenance concerns, and the impoundment of a leased aircraft from Zambezi Airlines over a U$ S 460,000 unpaid debt.

Airline Baggage Allowance:

The maximum hand luggage allowed in Air Zimbabwe flight is 08 kilos. However the check in baggage allowance varies from destination to destination and season as well. On an average the flight departure from London are allowed 2pieces@23kgs in Economy and 2pieces@32kgs in Business class. The regional and domestic flights also allow the same limitation.
